Humberto Calderón Berti, ambassador to Colombia, said that “since the arrival of Hugo Chávez to power Venezuela became a safe haven for Colombian guerrilla forces.”
The ambassador said that the military exercises carried out by Nicolás Maduro on the border with Colombia are to internally distract the Venezuelan population that has great deficiencies and, secondly, it is an act of provocation. It is not something new, it has been done on other occasions.”
Also, he reflected that in Colombia there are 1.5 million Venezuelans, distributed throughout the territory, “so when they say they are going to send those missiles, are they labeled to make Colombians fall and not their Venezuelan brothers? Will they attack the Armed Forces to attack their nationals? I have the impression that this is not going to past the bravado”.
Regarding the allegations of Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo during the session of the Organization of American States, Calderón Berti said that “we all know that Venezuela since Chávez came to power, became a safe haven for Colombian guerrilla forces.”
“It is no secret to anyone that in the border areas the ELN has control and active presence, the international community has not realized the seriousness of this.” He said that not only is the displacement of indigenous ethnic groups in the area, but also a great impact on the environment by the exploitation of gold, an ecological crime. “A scandal forms when there is a fire in Brazil but it turns a blind eye when there is an ecological crime, as happens in the Mining Arc.”
