The president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, declared this Monday national mourning for the unfortunate death of 19 Venezuelans found near the coast of Güiria, after having been shipwrecked in their attempt to flee the dictatorship in Venezuela and being returned by the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
In his Twitter account, the interim president reported that the national mourning will last three days “for the tragedy of Güiria, for the loss for the nation and what it represents for Venezuela” and stressed that “we cannot allow the horror to be normalized . We must point to those responsible and do everything that corresponds to us to protect life and dignity “.
The Venezuelan Ambassador to the United States, Carlos Vecchio, denounced this incident as an example of how Nicolás Maduro’s regime continues to claim Venezuelan lives. “We have insistently denounced this to the world: Maduro is the creator and sole person responsible for the humanitarian tragedy in Venezuela that has claimed and continues to claim the lives of millions of Venezuelans.”
He recalled that in the world, “until Maduro’s arrival, only rafters who fled from Cuba and some regions of Africa were known. The image of a deceased child from Syria captured the world’s attention in 2015. Now this terrible modality of fleeing dictatorships towards the open sea in fragile boats is carried out by Venezuelan rafters. Maduro’s criminal dictatorship is ending our Venezuelan brothers by forcing millions to seek a present and future away fromVenezuela,” he added.
For the Venezuelan diplomat, the shipwreck of the 19 Venezuelans, discovered 6.3 nautical miles off the coast of Sucre, “is a reflection of what is to come for our Venezuelan brothers if the political, social and humanitarian crisis is not resolved in Venezuela”. In addition, he highlighted that this crisis deepened with the electoral fraud of December 6th imposed by Nicolás Maduro, so it is “urgent to get rid of this criminal regime.”
Due to this tragedy, Vecchio reiterated that the international community has “the shared responsibility to protect the victims of the dictatorship, something very different from the way in which the authorities of Trinidad and Tobago have been acting.”
He assured that the call for help “has been ratified by the Venezuelans in the Popular Consultation on December 12th. For this reason, the world must take action accordingly, speak out and condemn what happened worldwide, they have a shared responsibility to protect”.
He also expressed his solidarity with the families of the Venezuelan castaways of Güiria, with the firm commitment that “we are not going to rest until justice is done for so much pain and suffering that the dictatorship has caused millions of Venezuelans.”
They warn of a worsening of the crisis in Venezuela
The Commissioner of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States for the crisis of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, David Smolansky reported that 7 adults and 4 minors have been identified in the Güiria tragedy and denounced that 9.3 million Venezuelans are suffering from famine and another 5 have emigrated, a situation to which the international community must respond.
“When we talk about 9.3 million people in a situation of famine in Venezuela according to the United Nations, it is almost the total of the population of Cuba. And if we add those who have left, we are talking about 15 million, which represents almost 50% of the Venezuelan population. What is the international community waiting for? Venezuela to be emptied? Dissoldved? That the Russian mercenaries, the FAES, the drug traffickers to remain in Venezuela? And that they then manage the oil refineries, the gas fields, whatever natural resources are left, while the good, decent, innocent, enterprising Venezuelans are left wandering the world, jumping into the water to survive?” he declared.
It should be noted that since November 22nd, 2020, the situation of the maritime border between Trinidad and Venezuela has left a balance of 16 deported children, 160 Venezuelans deported in coordination with the ZODI Militia of Delta Amacuro and the shipwreck of at least 19 Venezuelans on December 13th, as reported by the Commissioner on Twitter.
