The Ambassador to Canada, Orlando Viera-Blanco, informed on the preparations to report incidents related to new episodes of political persecution, arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, harassment, attempted assassination and murders that will be brought to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
As is a well known, public and communicational fact, recently the President in Charge, Juan Guaidó, was the object of an attempted kidnapping by law enforcement groups of the Caracas’ regime, using long weapons and setting off explosives, in the middle of a violent operation without any kind of guarantees. Also, Deputy Freddy Guevara was subjected to a forced disappearance for several hours (more than 50) and then illegaly detained by Nicolás Maduro’s regime.
Likewise, arrest warrants have been issued against several opposition leaders of the Interim Government of President Juan Guaidó, all of which has been compounded by the harassment of relatives of members of the Interim Presidency.
It should be noted that these serious events that involve crimes against humanity, occur at the same time representatives of the European Union are present in Venezuela in a diplomatic mission to search for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
“We are documenting each of these incidents already mentioned with the purpose of recording rigorous testimonies, evidence, reports and grounds, to bring an updated report of these events to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, at a time when the Preliminary Trial Chamber has recently decided to go forward about the cases on Venezuela and carry out the corresponding evaluations of the admissibility of the complaints and referrals made by party states and to ultimately move to the official investigation phase,” he said.
“It is time to end impunity. We are working hand in hand with Presidential Commissioner Humberto Prado to bring an updated incident report to the ICC in The Hague, duly assisted by accredited jurists,” he concluded.
