The embassy in Brazil, overseen by the diplomat Maria Teresa Belandria, issued a statement categorically rejecting the accusations of Maduro’s dictatorship against the government of the Federative Republic of Brazil and its president, Jair Bolsonaro, which seeks to alter the truth that Venezuelan migrants are living in that country.
Following is the full statement:
The embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela firmly and categorically rejects the unfounded accusations of Nicolas Maduro’s regime against the government of the Federative Republic of Brazil and its president, Jair Bolsonaro.
The adjectives used against President Bolsonaro are unacceptable, as is the claim that Venezuelans are fleeing Brazil because of “discrimination, xenophobia and other related forms of intolerance” that seek to falsify a truth without any evidence but quite the contrary.
Brazil, through the Casa Civil and Operação Acolhida, has provided dignified, respectful and professional treatment to Venezuelans who fled the regime that condemned them to hunger, misery and destitution. This nation has welcomed with open arms more than 280,000 Venezuelans who enjoy the rights that Venezuela denied them: identification, legal immigration status, free medical attention throughout the public health network, and emergency aid for the pandemic in which they were included without discrimination. In other words, Venezuelans in Brazil enjoy the same rights that the law grants to Brazilians by birth.
To be consistent with its denunciation, Nicolas Maduro’s regime should immediately order the withdrawal of all its diplomatic and consular personnel in Brazil. However, he keeps them in Brazilian territory knowing that nobody recognizes them as authorities since they no longer have diplomatic status, protected only by a habeas corpus and with the disdain of the Venezuelans, as demonstrated in the recent protests that occurred throughout Brazil.
From the embassy, and on behalf of all Venezuelans, we reiterate that we will never have enough words to thank President Bolsonaro and the people of Brazil for their permanent attention to Venezuelan migrants and refugees.
Muito obrigado Brazil! We are together!
