Maduro’s regime refuses to continue with the negotiation process started in Mexico “if Carlos Vecchio continues in the delegation.” My actions in favor of the freedom of Venezuela have greatly annoyed the dictator, for that reason, once again as he has done in all previous negotiation processes, he has demanded this veto so that I do not integrate the delegation of the Unitary Democratic Platform that attends the negotiation process in Mexico, to the point of paralyzing the process.
From the Venezuelan Embassy in the United States, we have consolidated bipartisan support in favor of the Venezuelan struggle, we have protected assets such as CITGO from the criminal corruption of the regime, we channel the necessary humanitarian aid for Venezuelans and we promote important mechanisms of pressure on Maduro’s dictatorship as sanctions against corrupt individuals and violators of human rights; all this with the objective of achieving the restitution of freedom and democracy.
The regime knows of our firm convictions: we do not believe in a mirage of a solution, but in a real solution to put an end to so much pain and suffering. The real solution for Venezuela will only occur with the rescue of democracy through fair, free and transparent presidential elections. Today there are no conditions for any electoral process in Venezuela. Maduro’s tailored “elections” have brought us into today’s social, political and humanitarian crisis.
The National Salvation Agreement proposed by Interim President Juan Guaidó seeks that real solution that we all want and that I strongly support. For this reason, I have no doubt that we must assume the Mexican negotiation process with the firm intention of achieving, in the shortest possible time, a presidential election so that the Venezuelan people can undertake the arduous task of national reconstruction. That is the path that we must promote.
For this reason, I want to make it clear that we will not be the excuse that the dictatorship uses to avoid the path that leads us to the real solution of this crisis, much less for the necessary release of political prisoners. Our country deserves to overcome the humanitarian tragedy suffered under the dictatorship and never again have a list of political prisoners, tortured, exiled and disappeared. Before any personal position, there are Venezuela and Venezuelans.
Furthermore, I want to communicate that from this moment the position corresponding to the Voluntad Popular party in the Mexican negotiation process will be occupied by Deputy Freddy Guevara, as part of the Unitary Democratic Platform. I have known Freddy for many years and thrust his strong democratic convictions. He will assume this role with determination, with the objective of obtaining fair, free and transparent presidential elections, not mirages of a solution.
The dictatorship has never had any qualms about threatening, blackmailing and lying. It has done so in all previous negotiation processes and it will do so in this one as well. Given this, the Unitary Democratic Platform must remain firm and united.
I call on the Kingdom of Norway: do not allow the continuation of these blackmails, do not allow the dictatorship to mock Venezuelans once again. The credibility of the Kingdom of Norway is also at stake. Provide a real solution to the crisis. If that attitude persists, the facilitators of the negotiation in Mexico will hardly have the desired results and, unfortunately, Venezuelans will pay the consequences again. The actual solution is in itself more important than the negotiation mechanism.
As Ambassador to the United States of the legitimate Interim Government of President Guaidó and as a Venezuelan, I continue working to achieve all the necessary international pressure in favor of the freedom of Venezuela, and so that those responsible for corruption, the looting of the nation, crimes, and human rights violations are brought to justice.
God bless Venezuela!
Ambassador of Venezuela to the United States
