The Ambassador to Belgium, Mary ponte, strongly rejected that Nicolás Maduro’s regime recently obtained a position in the United Nations Human Rights Council.
“Cuba and Iran join forces to achieve, together with the narco-tirany, that the latter gets to the UN Human Rights Council, in a work that began since Cuba took office 3 years ago. In the midst of this incoherence Maduro gets to be in an organ that has just issued a report recounting the flagrant violations of human rights he commits in Venezuela”, said Ambassador Ponte in a first statement.
She also affirmed that “The States that are candidates for this position in the Human Rights Council are obliged by a General Assembly Resolution to comply with the highest standards of protection of human rights, standards that are not met by the State governed by the Venezuelan narco-tirany, the foregoing will not allow it to operate before this instance, it will also get a strong pressure from the free and democratic world, defenders of Human Rights and justice. Pressure that will be exacerbated following the report detailing the serious violations of human rights that occur in Venezuela.”
For Ponte, there is no justification for the granting of this seat. “Given the absurdity of the election of Venezuela as a member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations Organization, a country currently governed by Maduro’s narco-tirany which has just been denounced in a report from the High Commissioner of Human Rights of the same UN detailing the violations of civil, political, economic, social, cultural and in all its human rights at its most ample definition”.
To conclude, she stressed: “We vote for the review of international institutions, their values and procedures, so that they are really effective in their purposes and the fulfillment of the objectives for which they were created, so that they meet the expectations that we have as citizens of Venezuela and the world in terms of their work.”
