The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, called on Nicolás Maduro’s regime to hand over Aída Merlano, a Colombian congresswoman who has fled from justice.
“It is up to the regime of Nicolás Maduro to hand over to the Colombian authorities the fugitive Aída Merlano, a former congresswoman who has escaped from prison,” said Almagro.
Merlano, who was serving a sentence in Colombia for corruption offences, escaped to Venezuela from the prison where she was imprisoned. However, she was captured by Maduro’s dictatorship.
Venezuelan officials are required to officially notify the Government of the Republic of Colombia of the capture of former Colombian Congresswoman Aida Merlano.
The legitimate Government of Venezuela will provide all possible cooperation, in the current context of institutional kidnapping in our country, to provide the brotherly Colombian Government with the legal and institutional framework necessary to facilitate the return of the former congresswoman to her country.
Similarly, we ask Interpol for its contribution and for the greatest possible collaboration in the effective implementation of the measures requested by the Government of the Republic of Colombia.
