Deputy Leopoldo López Gil on Wednesday thanked the European Parliament for its support of the democratic movement led by President (E) Juan Guaidó, which seeks to remove Nicolás Maduro’s regime from power.
“The Venezuelan democrats are very grateful to the European Parliament, particularly the European People’s Party, for the pressure, the solidarity, the recognition of the legitimate President Juan Guaidó and the sanctions imposed,” said the MEP during his speech at the congress of the European People’s Party (EPP).
López Gil explained what Venezuela used to be, 20 years ago, a country full of peace and prosperity but that fell “into the destructive hands of military communism. A new force called 21st Century Socialism”.
“At that time, the country had 28 million inhabitants, now almost 5 million Venezuelans have migrated in the last three years and, according to the United Nations, it is expected that by the end of the following year 1 in 3 Venezuelans will have left the country, the worst migration crisis in the world today,” said the father of political leader Leopoldo López.
He also recalled that 30,000 Venezuelans have been killed by violence in the last year.
