US Senator Marco Rubio issued the following statement on Monday, following the announcement that the Organization of American States (OAS) has begun the process to invoke the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance, better known as the TIAR, in support of the restoration of Democratic order and the rule of law in Venezuela. The measure comes after the request of the interim president of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, to the National Assembly to approve the return of Venezuela to the Inter-American Treaty.
“While Maduro and his narcoterrorist regime continues to threaten the democratic order, stability and prosperity in the region, he commended the OAS intention to invoke the TIAR to counter the threat of Maduro’s regime. It is time that all democracies in the region support the Venezuelan people and denounce any attack by Maduro’s regime as an attack against all member countries. I applaud the leadership of the United States Ambassador to the OAS Carlos Trujillo and that of the Venezuelan Ambassador to the OAS Gustavo Tarre Briceño who have worked tirelessly in support of the cause of liberating Venezuela from tyranny”, said Rubio.
Rubio is the President of the Subcommittee on Foreign Relations for the Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civil Security, Democracy, Human Rights and Global Women’s Affairs.
