Senator Bob Menendez, Senior Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congratulated Juan Guaidó on his re-election as President of the National Assembly (NA) of Venezuela.
“The international community stands firm in its support for interim President Guaidó, as demonstrated by the outpouring of statements from democratic leaders throughout the hemisphere and Europe, as well as from bipartisan members of the U.S. Congress. Today the world can clearly see that Maduro’s regime’s attempt to install a puppet leader in the National Assembly was another illegitimate and unsuccessful assault on Venezuela’s last remaining democratic institution,” Menendez said.
Likewise, the senator assured that the United States will continue working together with the Venezuelan people to restore democracy in Venezuela.
“With an increasingly dictatorial regime, now is the time to align international sanctions with US efforts to help ensure a peaceful return to democracy and guarantee free and fair legislative and presidential elections in Venezuela by 2020,” he concluded.
