The U.S. chargé d’affaires for Venezuela, James Story, said that the European Union (EU) has become an “escape valve” for relatives of members of the Nicolas Maduro regime in the absence of sanctions.
“The EU should not be an escape valve for members of the regime (…) We all have to force those people to work for the good of the people of Venezuela,” Story said in an interview with Voice of America.
Story said the international community has to work together to expand the number of people affected by the sanctions.
“The EU has to think through how they can support a pressure process against a regime,” he added.
The US representative also stressed that “interim President Juan Guaidó has the full support of the United States of America.”
