During a press conference, the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, reiterated the White House’s support for President (E) Juan Guaidó as president of the transition executive.
Kozak assured that he will recognize and respect any politician who, through free elections, becomes President of the National Assembly, however, he expressed that he has “reasons to believe that he will be Juan Guaidó”.
“I have no reason to believe that President Guaidó will not be re-elected, because he is by far the most popular politician in the country, and he continues to have the support of parties that are not chavistas,” he said.
“We support democratic institutions, not a specific person, and support for Guaidó emanates from the fact that he is the democratically elected president of the National Assembly, within the channels marked by the Venezuelan Constitution, and his election is an effect of democratic processes.
Kozak denied any rumors of loss of confidence in Venezuela’s interim government and urged leaders in the region to take serious action against Maduro’s regime.
“Proud to stand with 13 regional leaders to take action against the corrupt Maduro regime. We call on all partner nations to support Juan Guaidó and to press for free and fair presidential elections.
