The former US ambassador to Venezuela, William Brownfield and senior advisor to the Americas Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies based in Washington, said the White House is aware of the presence in Venezuela of non-Venezuelan criminal groups and that the these groups also offer support toMaduro’s regime to stay in power.
“The US has evidence of the presence of criminal groups such as the ELN or the reconstituted FARC units that are part of Maduro’s protection and security apparatus, along with thousands of Cuban military, as well as Iranians, Lebanese and Syrians belonging to Hezbollah. Their role is to protect the dictatorship. We are talking about a tragedy”, said the US diplomat in the statements offered to Venezuelausa.org.
On the other hand, he indicated that the Government of the United States has evidence of the relationship between Nicolás Maduro and these irregular groups such as the ELN and reconstituted units of the FARC who are part of the Maduro protection system.
“I am not going to say that they endanger national security (of the United States) but the possibility of operations from Venezuela to several targets in the US or any other country in the hemisphere is a concern, it is another point of tension and friction in the relations of the countries of the hemisphere with Venezuela”, he said.
