The deputy to the National Assembly for the Falcon state and leader of Voluntad Popular, Luis Stefanelli, denounced in the name of his political party the abandonment of the Amuay refinery and affirmed that the fire at the Paraguana Refining Center, that occurred early this morning Friday after a thunderstorm, was caused by the lack of a working lightning system.
“There is no lightning system in the refinery, the fire lasted between 4 and 5 hours without being attended, which resulted in more damage and possible operational problems. This is a sign of the absolute negligence that exists in the management of the refinery, in which the necessary corrections have not been made since the Amuay tragedy that triggered these tragic accidents”, said Stefanelli.
The parliamentarian recalled that the Amuay refinery is the only one that is operating even if marginally in Venezuela. He reported that it processes about 100 thousand barrels per day, which are redirected to the island of Cuba.
“After the fire, the regional electrical system in Punto Fijo collapsed and was restored in only 35% in Paraguana, which indicates the severity of the incident. The Sebin cordoned off the facilities and does not allow access to prevent further information about it. They took away all the tank trucks from the main supply of the entity, leaving it underserved, when 70% of the town is supplied through these tank trucks”, explained the parliamentarian.
Finally, Stefanelli said that so far there is no official information on the facts by the authorities of the Refining Center. “We denounce the abandonment of the refinery and reject any attempt to attribute the fact to sabotage, because it was the result of lightning that affected the place because the center does not have a system to forestall them, taking into account the amount of these phenomena that occur in the area”, he concluded.
