The lack of air and sea connectivity to Margarita and Coche Islands has wreaked havoc on tourism in recent years. The crisis reached the point where most of the nautical and terrestrial entertainment companies in them have closed their doors definitively as a consequence of the national economic situation.
William Peláez, provider of tourist services, confirmed that the association they had formed, and that he chaired until a few weeks ago, had disintegrated by the closure of almost all the companies in the field.
Peláez explained that, at its best, there were 13 nautical service companies, of which only three remain. Of the tour services with all-terrain vehicles, only one remains. In the diving services there are only four left.
The main beaches of Margarita and Coche, which in times not so distant were filled with domestic and foreign tourists, today look desolate as a result of the economic recession that overwhelms the country.
