Caracas Metro workers represented in the Asociación de Jubilados y Pensionados (AJUPEMECA) and El Frente Unido de Trabajadores del Metro de Caracas denounced that they were putting their lives at risk due to the constant failures of the system.
Jairo Colmenares, member of the union leadership of the Caracas Metro, affirmed that the workers are not to blame for the events that have been taking place in the institution. He explained that the failures are due to the lack of maintenance and materials for the staff.
“What are the directors of the Caracas subway playing? They are putting the lives of users and our co-workers at risk. There is no planning when it comes to maintenance, lack of investment and recovery of spaces. Of the 42 trains that were on line one, currently only between 10 and 13 are operating, this is a clear reflection of the situation that the system is suffering. We want to call on all the competent institutions to investigate what is really happening in the organisation.”
Among the recent failures in what was once called “The great solution for Caracas” is the fire generated in La California station, the derailment in the Plaza Venezuela station, as well as the constant delays and failures of trains that occur daily in the various lines that make up the subway system.
For his part, Deillily Rodriguez, union director of the institution, lamented that until now the authorities of the subway have not made any pronouncement, an act that in his opinion should be performed by any serious and responsible company, as it used to be in the Caracas subway.
Regarding the incident that occurred on Tuesday between the Colegio de Ingenieros and Plaza Venezuela stations, Rodriguez explained that a train lost codes and could not rearm the fault, becoming stranded in between stations with to the train coming behind. “The wagons had no air and because of the long waiting time, the users began to despair, opened the emergency doors, went out to the tracks and as there was no personnel to guide them, some disoriented users went to lines 2 and 3 of the system, leaving through the Rental Zone or towards the road leading to El Valle station.”
Finally, the union representative exhorted the company to make an investigation of all the events that have been occurring and asked that it take responsibility for the bad management, which has endangered not only users, but also workers.
