Flor Aguiar, director of the Luis Razzetti medical center in Barcelona (Anzoátegui state), said that maternal and neonatal malnutrition is the main cause of newborn deaths in recent days in the health complex. Authorities say that the six babies who died in October were premature and lacked weight.
“Starting the month of October there were six neonatal deaths whose causes were basically prematurity and extreme low weight. Newborns with extreme low weight that, when you take them to the tables, you realize that the weight is far less than what it should be according to gestational age. This indicates that there is intrauterine malnutrition”, said Aguiar.
Likewise, the director indicated that the lack of prenatal control, coupled with poor maternal nutrition, directly complicates the clinical picture of infants because their immune system and physical development are not ideal. These complications can be added to that of mothers that have a history of having had an uncontrolled pregnancy.
