The teaching activities have stopped in some schools in the state of Merida. However, the struggle for better working conditions is maintained by the teachers’ union.
The Merida Teachers’ Union Coalition granted the Ministry of Education until December 15th to respond to its labor demands. If the authorities do not give an answer by next Sunday, the educational centers will paralyze all activities.
“In January we are going to take union actions, among those: staggered strikes up to indefinite strikes or general strike. It’s going to depend on what the ministry says,” said Ramón Alí Contreras, president of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers in Mérida.
Taking stock of the educational situation during 2019, Contreras said that this year ends with red numbers. The cause of this educational crisis is the desertion of teachers and students, bad school conditions and student malnutrition.
The crisis promoted by Nicolás Maduro’s regime directly affects the education of Venezuelan children and adolescents. The lack of basic services such as electricity and water make the schools uninhabitable, transportation to schools is not available on all urban routes, and the cost of fare is not accessible to ordinary Venezuelans.
