The salary and employment situation of university workers is increasingly unsustainable, the salaries they earn range from approximately 5 to 10 dollars a month, money that given the economic crisis that the country is not enough to cover even a third of the basic expenses needed in a home.
Teachers demand a base salary of 600 US dollars a month to cover their basic expenses, said the president of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (Fevemaestros), Orlando Alzuru.
The salary situation is not the only problem that workers suffer, so are the conditions of the spaces in which they work. They very bad and worrisome conditions, in addition to lacking the basic tools to perform daily tasks.
Jhon Quintero, a worker at the Universidad de los Andes, said that “the same employees are the ones who maintain the institution, thanks to their sacrifice. The salary is not enough at all and sometimes there is no paper or ink”.
Despite the dark panorama and the sacrifices that Patricia Carcavallo, a ULA office worker, must overcome, she said she hopes that there will be a change and the situation of university workers will improve.
For its part, the Nueva Esparta nucleus of the Universidad de Oriente, starts classes next Monday, a new semester with an exacerbated budget crisis.
José Vallejo, academic coordinator of the center of higher education, said that “although the university budget has already been exhausted, the institution’s workers refuse to abandon the students and close their doors.”
