The head of the U.S. Southern Command, Admiral Craig Faller, said the world’s democracies expect a free and prosperous country for Venezuelans while he assured that Cuba, Russia and China “support the illegitimate dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro.”
“This vicious circle threatens the region with corruption, international criminal organizations, violent organizations and the influence of external countries like Russia, China and Iran. This situation is exacerbated by the tragedy in Venezuela,” he said.
The US Admiral considered that the only way to end the “vicious circle” is as a team.
“In this region our partners are willing to contribute. We need a military presence. That includes Venezuela,” he said.
“I have come to describe the challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean as a vicious circle of threats that deliberately erodes the security and stability of this region and the United States,” Faller said.
The admiral added that the countries of the region “are dealing with this crisis and it is affecting their health, education and social systems. Colombia alone has spent $2.5 billion in the last two years just to deal with Venezuelan migration.
“Human suffering in a once democratic country has led to the flight of more than 5 million Venezuelans to neighboring countries such as Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile and others,” the admiral recalled.
Craig expressed his concern and alarm over the advantageous position China is taking in the region.
