Carlos Trujillo, U.S. Ambassador to the OAS, said the sanctions imposed on Nicolás Maduro’s regime have been a real success,
“We’ve seen the way Nicolás Maduro and his corrupt friends are handling the country, it’s a total disaster and it is their responsibility,” he said during an interview.
Trujillo said this is the first time the U.S. government has imposed sanctions on specific individuals and applauded TIAR’s decision as a pressure measure on Maduro.
“They will not be able to travel through the 26 member countries of TIAR, open bank accounts, they will not be active in those countries,” he said, adding that the measure will be extended to the closest relatives of the dictatorship’s officials.
The diplomat said Donald Trump’s administration plans to coordinate with the European Union similar sanctions in its territory to Maduro’s regime.
Trujillo reiterated that he sees a possible transition to democracy in Venezuela, without Nicolás Maduro in power.
“No transition could have Nicolás Maduro and it has to be a transition to democracy,” he insisted.
