The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, published her annual report on the activities of preliminary examinations on Thursday.
The brief details the preliminary examination activities carried out by the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) during the period from December 1st, 2018 to November 30th, 2019, in relation to nine cases under consideration for a possible investigation.
During 2019, the OTP has continued its preliminary examinations of the cases in Colombia, Guinea, Iraq/UK, Nigeria, Palestine, the Philippines and Ukraine, all of which are now in the admissibility stage (complementarity and gravity), and in Venezuela, where the Office has been working to finalize its assessment of the issue’s jurisdiction.
The document provides a summary of the status of each case under preliminary examination, including the Office’s current analyses with regard to issues of jurisdiction and admissibility, as well as the activities undertaken by the Office in 2019 to advance this work.
In doing so, the OTP aims to promote public awareness and transparency with regard to its preliminary examination process and related activities.
