The president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Gabriela Cuevas Barrón, condemned on Saturday the violation of the parliamentary immunity of four deputies of the Venezuelan National Assembly and repudiated the arbitrary detention of deputy Gilber Caro.
“Congressman Caro has been detained in violation of the right to due process. We demand his release and the immediate cessation of the persecution in Venzuela,” Cuevas said in a message posted on her official Twitter account.
With respect to the violation of the parliamentary immunity of several members of the National Assembly, Cuevas Barrón said that “the attack by Maduro’s regime on the National Assembly is of great concern to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.”
The International Democratic Union (IDU) and the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA) are deeply alarmed about by the worst crisis that Venezuela has gone through in its republican history, with the destruction of its political system, the breakdown of the rule of law, the attack on civil society, the persecution of civil and military dissidents and the negligence of the regime in meeting the basic needs of the population for food, health and basic public services.
On this basis, IDU and UPLA declare:
We reiterate our full support for the Venezuelan National Assembly and President Juan Guaidó, as the only legitimate authorities in the country, in accordance with the current Venezuelan Constitution.
We demand the immediate cessation of human rights violations and immunities violations against members of the Venezuelan National Assembly and support President Juan Guaidó in his fight against corruption.
We condemn the open intervention of the Maduro regime in democratic countries throughout Latin America with the intention to destabilize their governments by promoting vandalism, looting and violence, acting in
co-ordination with extreme left groups, drug cartels and anarchist movements.
We insist on the urgent need for a free, fair and transparent early general election in Venezuela, including the presence of international observers throughout the electoral process, in order to restore the institutionallity, rights and rule of law in the country.
