Senior officials of the International Contact Group (ICG) met on Wednesday to discuss the crisis in Venezuela generated by Nicolas Maduro’s regime.
ICG members said the political crisis in Venezuela is alarming. They said they were concerned about the reduction of democratic space and the continued violation of human rights. They also highlighted the migration problem which has been worsened by the emergence of Covid-19.
The ICG strongly rejected recent decisions by the illegitimate Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which illegally appointed a new board of directors of the National Electoral Council (CNE).
“Recent Supreme Court decision of unilaterally appointing members of the National Electoral Council, which is neither balanced nor independent, and the replacement of the board of directors of some of the main opposition parties undermines the possibility of a consensual electoral path and democratic elections,” reads the ICG’s statement
The ICG urged Maduro’s regime to stop unilateral actions and to seek a democratic way out.
The group pledged to support and continue to build an international aid network for a democratic future in Venezuela.
Likewise, the International Contact Group agreed to continue joining efforts with the objective of guaranteeing full access to Venezuelans in a state of vulnerability.
