The Christian Democrat Organization of America (ODCA) expresses its concern about the Venezuelan regime’s recent measures aimed at destroying the democratic parties and warns that Venezuela is one step away from becoming a totalitarian dictatorship.
ODCA reiterates its rejection of the ploy to criminalize, dissolve or take over opposition political parties through resolutions of an illegitimate Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), a body under the total control of the Executive branch.
In the last few hours, Nicolás Maduro’s regime has taken control of the Acción Democrática (AD) and Primero Justicia (PJ) parties by suspending the legitimate directives presided over by Henry Ramos Allup and Julio Borges, respectively, and appointing two government allies as new authorities: Bernabé Gutiérrez for AD and José Brito for PJ. Likewise, the TSJ could soon decree the dissolution of the Voluntad Popular Party.
Maduro’s regime thus continues its attack on the parties that began five years ago with the intervention of the Christian Social Party (Copei) on July 30th, 2015.
Political parties are fundamental organizations for the participation of citizens in democratic life and for national representation. Therefore, these measures violate citizens’ rights, freedom, democracy and, at the same time, consolidate totalitarian dictatorships.
In view of this situation, ODCA reiterates its strong rejection of the destruction of the party system in Venezuela and the elimination of the democratic opposition with the creation, in practice, of puppet political parties under the control of the Venezuelan government.
ODCA states that it will continue to recognize Roberto Henríquez (Copei), Henry Ramos (AD) and Julio Borges (PJ) as legitimate authorities of these parties.
ODCA warns that, with the disappearance of the opposition parties and the political opposition, Venezuela is one step away from a totalitarian dictatorship and that Maduro’s regime is taking advantage of the fact that the world is focused on the COVID-19 pandemic to perpetuate itself in power.
The ODCA calls on democratic governments and international organizations to take action to demand an end to the political persecution of the opposition and to promote the restoration of democracy and citizens’ rights in the sister Republic of Venezuela.
