U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo reiterated his support for the Venezuelan people, President Juan Guaidó and the legitimate National Assembly as part of the celebration of Venezuela’s Independence Day this Sunday.
Pompeo insisted that Venezuelans, after their struggle to get rid of Nicolas Maduro’s regime, are getting closer day by day to the “true celebration of independence.”
“Today the Venezuelan people carry the spirit of Simon Bolivar as they seek a democratic transition from authoritarian rule, incited by the infamous foreign infiltrators who allow repression and corruption. This fight for freedom and democracy will not end until its objectives are fulfilled,” reads the statement.
The U.S. Secretary of State also stressed his commitment to democracy in Venezuela and to working for free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections.
“The United States, and nearly 60 nations, stands with the Venezuelans inside Venezuela and with the more than 5 million forced to flee their country,” he insisted.
“Estados Unidos, y casi 60 naciones, están con los venezolanos dentro de Venezuela y con los más de 5 millones obligados a huir de su país”, insistió.
