The Commissioner of the OAS General Secretariat for the crisis of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, David Smolansky, held a working meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Paulo Abrao, who was recently in Cúcuta collecting information and testimonies from Venezuelans fleeing the crisis created by Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship.
Smolansky and Abrao agreed that Venezuelans deserve to receive refugee status due to the extreme conditions in which they are forced to leave their country.
“Millions are fleeing from widespread violence, public disorder, human rights violations and foreign occupation,” Smolansky said.
The Venezuelan commissioner stressed the importance for Venezuelan migrants to be heard by international bodies.
“Thanks to Paulo Abrao and his team for going to the border. The greatest evidence of the horror of tyranny is to hear the testimonies of the refugees,” Smolansky ended.
