A spokesman for the United States Department of State expressed the desire of Joe Biden’s Administration that the regional and municipal elections, scheduled for November 21st in Venezuela, take place in a credible way and reflect the will of Venezuelans.
“We have always said that it is up to the Venezuelan political parties to determine their participation in the local and regional voting scheduled for November 2021. We share the opinion of the Unitary Platform that the responsibility lies entirely with those who will administer this process to do so in a free and fair manner, with transparency and in an inclusive way,” said the State Department spokesman.
Likewise, he assured that the United States Government will continue to support the comprehensive negotiation process to achieve free and fair elections to solve the crisis in Venezuela.
“The United States will continue to work with the international community to press for substantive and credible advances to restore democratic processes and institutions in Venezuela. These include the unconditional release of all political prisoners, greater humanitarian access, freedom of expression, including for members of the press, and peaceful assembly, rehabilitation of politicians and political parties so that Venezuelans can elect their leaders, and the cessation of attacks against civil society and intimidation and repression against the Venezuelan democratic opposition,” the spokesperson concluded.
