The U.S. virtual embassy to Venezuela celebrated the escape of Presidential Commissioner for the coordination of the Center of Government, Leopoldo López, from the political persecution of Nicolás Maduro’s regime.
“Leopoldo López and others like him should not feel that they have to leave Venezuela. They should be able to participate fully and freely in the political process,” it assured.
The United States Embassy reiterated its rejection of Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship and the constant violation of human rights, as well as the hundreds of political prisoners who are held captive.
“The regime has destroyed the rule of law and political prisoners are routinely falsely accused of crimes. More than 300 political prisoners remain in detention and more than 5 million Venezuelans have left their country,” it said.
The diplomatic headquarters urged Maduro’s regime to release the political prisoners they are arbitrarily detaining. “They must be released immediately and unconditionally,” it added.
