Congressman Carlos Valero, member of the Foreign Policy Commission of the National Assembly (NA), denounced that state security officials subject Venezuelans who are walking towards the Táchira border to flee the crisis induced by Nicolás Maduro’s regime to robbery, harassment and humiliation.
“The discourse of hate of Maduro’s regime against the brothers who have fled the economic crisis has a sounding board in the police and military. Our brothers are being humiliated, robbed and abused by those who are supposed to protect them,” expressed the parliamentarian elected by the State of Táchira.
He also warned about a new wave of Venezuelan migrants who are walking and hitching rides, from the cities in the interior of the country to the border, to cross through the trails to Colombia and other countries in the region in search of a better quality of life.
“The new wave of migrants walking or hitching a ride is a demonstration of desperation in the face of a terrible economic situation. Even in the midst of the pandemic, they risk what little they have in search of better conditions. We are seeing only the beginning of a new wave of migration in much more precarious conditions than the previous ones,” he said.
Valero reported that with this massive exodus occurring, the number of Venezuelan migrants and refugees could reach 5.5 million before the end of 2020.
“We tell all our brothers that the economic, health and service conditions are not given to undertake this journey, but we understand their suffering and desperation. However, from the National Assembly we will do everything in our power to help our brothers and sisters, make visible the violations of their human rights and document what is happening,” he said.
The congressman rejected the hate campaign that Maduro has launched against Venezuelan migrants and refugees who are trying to return to their country and demanded that the security forces stop the abuses and arbitrariness against Venezuelan travelers who are treking to the border. “They have to understand that they are also their brothers. Do not get caught up in the hateful and xenophobic discourse promoted by Maduro and his acolytes. We will take the corresponding denunciations to the competent instances, within the National Assembly, as well as to the international organizations,” he ended.
