The national public health system is going through its worst period and Venezuelans are unprotected against any epidemic, warned this Thursday, January 30th, Representative Manuela Bolivar, political coordinator of the social area of Plan País, and Ana Rosario Contreras, president of the College of Nurses of Caracas.
“An epidemic like the Coronavirus in Venezuela would be a disgrace. The Venezuelan population has no way to protect itself from this type of disease and our hospitals are not capable of dealing with this,” explained Contreras, who also urged the public to remain in active protest to claim their rights and support the nurses’ union, which not only demands economic benefits, but also supplies and equipment to be able to carry out their work.
With a minimized public health system, Bolívar explained, “the proposals made by Plan País are basic: electricity, quality water, medicines and generating working conditions that allow our health professionals to remain in their positions.” The legislator added that reactivating the economic system and increasing the state’s fixed income are key elements in maintaining medical services.
Plan País, a national reconstruction project promoted by Parliament and organized civil society, includes the implementation of a health program aimed at achieving the following objectives in the short term:
1- Promote the priority supply of medicines, materials, medical equipment and everything necessary to ensure adequate diagnosis and treatment, with support from the distribution mechanisms developed by the private initiative and the organizations that are dealing with the complex humanitarian emergency.
2- Enable a system that allows patients to access medicines associated with high-impact chronic diseases, as well as the distribution of high-cost medicines.
3- Promote emergency hospital care in medical, surgical and para-clinical areas.
4- Promote vaccination programs and prevention of transmissible diseases.
“It will be a State policy to provide and prepare hospital and outpatient networks, which include interventions to recover the basic operability of public health facilities. It will include improvements in infrastructure and basic equipment and, in the medium term, a program of preventive and permanent maintenance of the services that make up the health system,” states the Plan País, presented in December by the President of the National Assembly and interim President of the Republic, Juan Guaidó.
VENEZUELA ON ALERT
In view of the global emergency regarding the Coronavirus, Bolivar said that Venezuela currently has cases of diseases that were eradicated and denounced that efforts have been insufficient due to the blockade that the usurper regime still maintains. Bolivar emphasized that the struggle of all Venezuelans for change will allow for the reconstruction of Venezuela, and indicated that the proposals of Plan País in the area of health clearly identify the priorities to gradually resolve the deficiencies in this area.
Contreras called on the Venezuelan citizenry to continue supporting the protests. “The nursing union is not going to give up. With the help and encouragement of all Venezuelans we will be able to achieve the changes we deserve. It is not only the responsibility of President Juan Guaidó, but of all Venezuelans,” the union leader concluded.
