The Deputy to the National Assembly, Tony Geara, warned about the serious environmental damage allowed by Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship that has encouraged illegal mining run by irregular armed groups in the Canaima National Park.
“We can say that the entire hydrological system is damaged and contaminated by the use of chemicals and mercury used by these miners or predators who are working the area, supposedly under a legal framework that they call the ‘Arco Minero’, which is nothing more than the total predation of the environment of what is our Canaima National Park,” denounced Geara.
The parliamentarian indicated that this situation even affects tourism in the area, already diminished by the humanitarian crisis, because the area is controlled by criminal gangs. He also pointed out that the other party that has been severely affected is that of the original indigenous people, who are not even allowed to have free movement around their ancestral lands.
The parliamentarian assured that any mining activity in these lands constitutes an irreversible attack against the biological heritage of Venezuela and humanity.
This week, the World Heritage Watch organization alerted UNESCO through a report on the environmental risk in Canaima National Park due to illegal mining that affects more than 500 hectares.
