The Presidential Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Julio Borges, participated, together with President (E) Juan Guaidó, in the 20th Meeting of the Andean Presidential Council where Colombia assumed the pro-tempore presidency of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) and the partial return of Venezuela to the regional bloc was made official. Borges said that Maduro is the main obstacle to achieving integration in the region and said that the CAN meeting marks not only Venezuela’s return to the bloc, but a first step towards a democratic alliance process.
“Maduro’s regime only seeks to promote terrorism, destabilization and radicalization in all countries, it is the obstacle to peace and integration of the continent. This meeting is the first step towards a true democratic alliance and for the progress of Andean citizens,” he said.
The Presidential Commissioner of Juan Guaidó’s government stated that the Venezuelan economy is complementary to the CAN markets. “A mistake made by the Venezuelan regime was to have us distanced from our closest partners. The CAN will be fundamental in the reactivation of the Venezuelan economy and in the recovery of trade, its markets are complementary to ours,” he said.
The CAN summit was attended by Presidents Lenin Moreno of Ecuador, Iván Duque of Colombia, Martín Vizcarra of Peru, Jeanine Áñez of Bolivia and the Secretary General of the CAN, Jorge Pedraza.
President Iván Duque said that the Chavista regime had distorted the concept of Bolivarianism in order to install dictatorships such as those in Venezuela and pointed out that movements similar to this regime were seeking to ride into countries under a discourse of hate and apology of crime in order to reach power. He insisted on the need to rescue Bolivarianism as a concept of integration and described multilateralism as fundamental for the defense of democracy, free enterprise and social development. The leaders agreed on the need for cooperation in the midst of the serious situation generated by the Covid-19 pandemic. They advocated economic reactivation to overcome productive imbalances.
