The Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights and Attention to Victims, Humberto Prado, extended his gratitude to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, for his denunciation of the serious situation of political prisoners in the DGCIM (Military Intelligence).
Prado stressed that the situation must be clarified immediately, as well as the attention of all the prisoners must be guaranteed, and their right to health and food must be respected. “The dictatorship is responsible for their lives,” he added.
In view of the opacity of information that the regime’s security corps has with the relatives of the detainees, Almagro demanded proof of life of political prisoners in Venezuela, as well as respect for their basic rights.
The IACHR demands that measures be taken
The Commissioner recalled the report issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) where he called on the States to take a series of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“The IACHR called on governments to adopt measures to address the overcrowding of detention units, including the re-evaluation of cases of pretrial detention to identify those that can be converted into alternative measures to deprivation of liberty,” Prado said.
