The Commissioner for Human Rights and Attention to Victims, Humberto Prado, demanded the release of Orlando Moreno, Coordinator of the Penal Forum (Foro Penal) in Delta Amacuro, who has been arbitrarily detained by officials of the dictatorship.
Moreno was illegally detained when he accompanied relatives of the victims of the recent shipwreck when in Tucupita (State capital), in order to gather information about the incident.
“Moreno is a human rights defender and early Saturday morning he documented the moment when relatives of the people who were on the boat demanded the release of the survivors outside the headquarters of the CICPC in Tucupita,” he said. The Commissioner informed that the activist had communicated that according to the information obtained from the affected relatives, 24 people were traveling on the boat, including four minors.
Prado highlighted that his office is collecting the information to send it to competent international bodies, such as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the UN Fact Finding Mission.
