Yesterday, March 21st, 15 armed men and identified as members of the Special Actions Forces (FAES), arbitrarily detained journalist Darvinson Rojas, alleging that they had received an anonymous call alleging that at their home there was a case of COVID-19 transmission. Given the refusal of Darvinson and his parents, Mr. Jesús Rojas and Mrs. Miriam Sánchez, to leave the house, they broke into the house violently, physically assaulting Mr. Rojas, stealing assets in house and arbitrarily detained them all. Mr. Darvinson’s parents were later released.
This action once again reveals the modus operandi of Nicolás Maduro’s usurper regime, which uses the FAES as the executing arm of systematic violations of the human rights of Venezuelans. Which is now taking its actions to a new level by taking advantage of the serious situation related to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the civic quarantine that the Venezuelan people are carrying out to carry out their tyrannical acts.
This situation is so serious that recently the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, requested the immediate dissolution of the FAES because of the extrajudicial executions they have committed.
In response to this request, the regime has perpetrated more aggressions and human rights violations using this death squad, this time to attack a journalist whose only crime is to inform the Venezuelan people in the midst of a communication blockade imposed by the regime to hide the reality of our country. Satanizing and trying to silence the free press will not solve the serious problems that afflict the country.
From the Government in Charge of Venezuela we repudiate this action by Nicolás Maduro’s regime and we hold it responsible for what may happen to the journalist Darvinson Rojas.
We demand his immediate release.
