Political leader and prisoner of conscience, Leopoldo Lopez, congratulated Joseph Biden as the new U.S. president-elect and the American people this Friday for holding their democratic elections, after the winner of the race was announced.
“Congratulations to President-elect Biden and to the American society, in holding an election that reflects their more than 200 years of democratic culture. Venezuelans appreciate the bipartisan support that the United States has given to the Venezuelan cause in our struggle to recover freedom and democracy for our country.”
In the words of President Biden: “Maduro is a dictator, it’s that simple. The Democratic Party leader previously stated that his goal in Venezuela will be to achieve freedom for Venezuelans living under the oppressive regime led by Maduro.”
“We are confident that we will continue to have the unrestricted support of the United States of America, and we will be able to work towards the realization of free, transparent and verifiable presidential elections so that our people can regain control of their own destiny,” said Leopoldo.
The Presidential Commissioner for the Center for Government called for strengthening cooperation between the United States and the Legitimate Government, headed by President Guaidó, with the mission of building an international front to end Maduro’s dictatorship. Among the objectives outlined by Leopoldo is to work for the unity of an international coalition, with the United States as a key ally, to put pressure on the dictatorship and achieve free presidential elections, to denounce crimes against humanity so that they do not go unpunished, and to coordinate more international aid to address the deep humanitarian crisis the country is going through.
In February of this year, the House of Representatives received President Guaidó in the most important political speech of the country, the State of the Union Address, where President Trump dedicated some words to the democratic struggle in Venezuela and the representatives of both parties gave a standing applause in recognition of the sacrifice and resistance of the Venezuelan people.
Leopoldo also thanked the current administration for all, for its commitment and support to President Guaidó since he assumed the interim mandate, being a fundamental support in the construction of the international coalition of almost 60 countries that reject the dictatorship in Venezuela and support the struggle to hold fair, free and verifiable presidential elections. In addition, he recognized the full commitment of the U.S. government in recent years to not allow crimes against Venezuelans to go unpunished.
Through his Twitter account, Leopoldo pledged to continue working with the current administration until the end of his term and to work with the administration of President-elect Joe Biden to continue to push for the removal of Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship.
