The Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights and Attention to Victims, Humberto Prado, affirmed that the new update of the Bachelet report on human rights violations in Venezuela are a “checkmate” for Maduro’s dictatorship.
Prado pointed out that what Michelle Bachelet stated ratifies the human rights violations in the country previously denounced by the Office of the High Commissioner in her previous reports.
In view of this, the presidential commissioner stressed that the report reiterates that in Venezuela continue the detention of demonstrators, repression of peaceful protests, deficiencies in public services, gasoline shortages, killings of demonstrators by security forces, restrictions on freedom of expression, attacks against human rights defenders, aggressions against journalists, and stigmatization of migrants returning to the country.
In addition, Prado highlighted that Bachelet reiterated in the new update of the report the lack of conditions in the country’s detention centers such as: access to healthcare, water, food and medicine, as well as the lack of biosecurity equipment for health professionals in the face of COVID-19, as well as the food crisis and acute child malnutrition.
The representative of the Legitimate Government also highlighted the deaths of young people in security operations, evidenced by Bachelet before the UN.
To conclude, Prado mentioned how Maduro’s dictatorship has constantly violated the Constitution in order to remain in power through the obstruction of the TSJ in the freedom of selection of political party representatives and the non-consensual appointment of members of the National Electoral Council (CNE), the selection of indigenous representatives for the NA, and the composition of the NA without an inclusive process of prior consultation.
