The President (e) of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó , and legitimate National Assembly (AN) showed their deep gratitude on behalf of all Venezuelansand to the European Parliament (PE) for making clear its rejection of the fraud of December 6th, 2020, and not recognizing the legitimacy or legality of the derivatives of said fraud. Also, for denouncing the threats made by Iris Varela, regarding the request for an order to “arrest and prosecute members of the opposition and Guaidó , as well as the confiscation of their assets and the revocation of their nationality,” among other considerations decided this Thursday, January 21st.
“On behalf of the people of Venezuela and our democratically elected National Assembly in 2015, I want to thank the European Parliament for its strong statement of support. The people of Europe have been a great friend to the Venezuelan people in our times of greatest need, and this is something we will never forget. This declaration of support for my Government and the right to self-determination of the Venezuelan people is deeply appreciated, it is consistent with the Venezuelan Constitution, and is a very important step towards the implementation of the Emergency Government that we need to carry out truly free and fair elections in 2021.”
Guaidó said that it was clear that the European Parliament “firmly supported” the Venezuelans by rejecting the recent “December electoral farce” carried out by Maduro’s dictatorship as well as and by “continuing to recognize the mandate of the legitimate National Assembly, elected in December 2015, which was the last free expression of Venezuelans in an electoral process.”
Regarding the complaint that the EP makes about the recent threats made by Iris Varela, an official of the dictatorship, against deputies and members of the opposition, the President in charge of Venezuela, defined it as a “strong reprimand” against the regime.
“The resolution was also a strong reprimand to Maduro’s dictatorship and the statements of Iris Varela, one of Maduro’s henchwomen, who intend to arrest and detain members of the legitimate National Assembly. Her statement accurately demonstrates the threat to peace and security in Venezuela and throughout the region, represented by the continuous human rights violations cited by the United Nations Human Rights Council in October 2020, which constitutes a crime against humanity. “
Guaidó again called on the United Nations Security Council, the Organization of American States (OAS) and other key multilateral bodies dedicated to peace and democracy, to “follow the bold leadership of Europe” and vigorously and swiftly condemn this act of aggression, and take measures to guarantee the safety of the members of the current National Assembly.
Finally, he said that he hopes to have the “opportunity to work together with the International Community to significantly increase the amount of humanitarian aid destined for the people of Venezuela, and to be able to count on the continuous support of the world to advance the cause of democracy in the country.”
