Construction sector unions in Nueva Esparta are denouncing the great crisis that the sector went through in 2019, where it closed with more than 95 percent paralysis without hope of recovery in the early months of 2020.
Jorge Valderrama, president of the Union of Industry in the island region, stressed that while contractors charge for work in dollars, they only accept that workers receive their payments in bolivars. So they prefer to remain unemployed.
The union leader confirmed that the little activity that is registered at present in the construction industry corresponds to foreign investments, but it is a very low percentage, which does not allow to recover the more than six jobs that have been lost in that industry in the last three years.
The production of materials (cement, steel, blocks), has also fallen and only covers the few public sector projects in the area of housing remodeling and adaptation. Citizens do not have confidence in the economy for investment in the country’s economic sectors.
