The lawyer member of the Coalition for Human Rights and Freedom, Ana Leonor Acosta, denounced that Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship planted illegal elements to justify the kidnapping of the renowned Venezuelan journalist, Roland Carreño, who was forced by the regime to record videos and mention the names of other political leaders.
“Roland Carreño was disappeared. Only the neighbors informed us that he was pulled into a car by unidentified individuals. These are illegal practices that lend themselves to arbitrariness and constitute crimes. The forced disappearance of Roland Carreño was denounced before international human rights bodies and was annexed to the report of the United Nations Fact-Finding Commission.
In a joint press conference with the Press Workers’ Union, the defense attorney denounced a series of irregularities in the procedure during the arrest of Roland Carreño. Dr. Acosta lamented that the state institutions, instead of guaranteeing respect for the rule of law, lend themselves to violating the human rights of citizens.
“In the short time we were given to review the file we saw the irregularities, starting with the police report in which the procedures established in the Organic Code of Criminal Procedure were not followed. Roland was under duress, forced to record several videos. He even told me that he was forced to repeat a video over and over again and to mention certain names. When the Public Ministry presents the facts we see inconsistencies, they point out that there was a confession and it did not say so in the file. If there was, it is illegal because it was done without the presence of his lawyers,” said Ana Leonor Acosta.
The co-defense lawyer, Joel Garcia, detailed that Carreño is accused of conspiracy, financing of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons of war. “The usurper of the prosecution denounces that Roland Carreño was not a victim of disappearance. Unfortunately, the prosecutor has little knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure law. There is still time to learn”.
Garcia announced that the defense will challenge the decision made in the early morning of October 29th against Roland Carreño. “We are going to file an appeal with the Court of Appeals and we will contest, because there is no evidence of these crimes”.
Journalistic Union Support
The General Secretary of the National Union of Press Workers, Marco Ruiz, expressed his solidarity with Roland Carreño and called on the democratic countries of the world to speak out against this new attack by Nicolás Maduro’s regime on freedom of thought, expression, association and the exercise of civil and political rights.
“Once again, a journalist who was disapeared for more than 48 hours has been imprisoned. In Venezuela there seems to be no justice today, when institutions are held hostage by the regime, but that does not justify those responsible for this and many other crimes against humanity. Today they are marked with name and surname, we know that sooner rather than later they will be held accountable”.
He insisted that Roland Carreño is just another victim of the regime’s hate and intolerance against those who dare to think differently. He expressed his solidarity with the mother, sons, brothers and other relatives of Roland Carreño.
“We are going to continue on this path of defending Roland Carreño together with his family and all the journalistic guild that has not ceased its expressions of support. We know very well the important trajectory of Roland Carreño and we also know how the regime acts when it is threatened. We commit ourselves to remain in resistance until all those who are imprisoned for thinking differently leave the dungeons of the regime.
