Health workers took the entrance to the Luis Razetti hospital complex in Barcelona, Anzoátegui State. This hospital is the main health center in the region and serves patients from five entities in eastern Venezuela.
The body of doctors and nurses assure that the conditions in the public network are not adequate to provide the service required by the population.
“A nurse can treat up to four or five patients, no more than that. However, there are services where a nurse can take care of up to 30 or 40 patients,” explained the vice president of the College of Nurses, Yolanda Yamales.
During the demonstration, the social comptroller, Oscar Segura, accused the workers who were protesting of participating in mafias that sell supplies. His words generated an altercation among those present.
“We have done intelligence work inside the Luis Razetti hospital facilities and we have caught people stealing medicines,” Segura said.
The health professionals say they will begin a series of staged protests to demand both optimal conditions in the hospitals and improvements in salaries that will allow them to have decent living conditions.
