Last June 26th, the Wall Street Journal published a series of accusations against the leaders of our political organization that, without a doubt and in the most transparent manner, we qualified as lacking any real support.
Since the beginning of Voluntad Popular, our party and its activists have faced all forms of violence, from the existential one that has meant the murder of several of our brothers, through the torture, exile and isolation of thousands of activists, to the verbal violence that pursues the moral murder of those who oppose the worst dictatorship our country has ever had.
In spite of all the attacks, for many years our party and our leaders have assumed with temperance and conviction all the necessary sacrifices in this struggle to recover Venezuela’s freedom. This is how our National Coordinator Leopoldo López, who has been unjustly deprived of his freedom for almost seven years, has been qualified as a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International.
One more episode in the long list of falsehoods and cases fabricated by the dictatorship to justify the stigmatization, repression and moral murder of democratic political parties is found in the false positive of the so-called “Operation Gideon”. The dictatorship itself and its spokesmen, who are now being sought by international justice under accusations of drug trafficking and terrorism, have publicly confessed on several occasions that they were behind that operation, financing it and supporting it. However, its propaganda apparatus has dedicated itself to misinformation, pointing out to the democratic leaders and our National Coordinator, Leopoldo López, that he was behind something that was actually organized by the person who today usurps power in Venezuela, to the pain and suffering of millions.
It is regrettable that in this critical hour of the struggle for freedom and democracy in Venezuela, the dictatorship and its propaganda apparatus find an echo in voices that are called upon to inform and show real facts, beyond malicious speculations that, far from having truth as their north, are governed by a logic of particular political interests.
That is why today, on the day of the journalist, in Voluntad Popular we want to congratulate and show our most sincere support to those professionals of the press who day by day risk their lives to bring the truth to millions of Venezuelans. You are a fundamental pillar of our struggle, which is none other than that of a country where all rights are for all people, without exclusions or privileges.
In Venezuela there is a people who suffer and fight for their freedom, and they do so against a violent and murderous dictatorship that does not spare any lies or deception to remain illegitimately in power.
