Margarita Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Venezuela, both for residents and foreigners. However, the holiday season, which always generated good income for traders and workers in the tourism area, declined significantly in 2019.
The preliminary assessment by the president of the Nueva Esparta Tourism Corporation, Luis Eduardo Rodríguez, highlighted that workers in the sector suffered a setback during the holiday season, making it impossible for them to meet their commercial goals.
“Basically, the reason is the country’s situation that prevents Venezuelan tourists from having the possibility of spending time in recreation and leisure,” said the president of the Tourism Corporation.
Travel agencies also suffered the effects of the crisis, with a sharp drop in ticket sales. The numbers point out that there was a 80% deficit in the area.
Rodriguez insisted on the need to rethink marketing strategies for the islands of Margarita and Coche to be considered as satisfactory tourist destinations in the Caribbean.
