The Electoral Observation Network of the Education Assembly expresses its deep concern and categorical rejection of the attempt, last January 5th, to disrupt the installation of the inaugural session of the National Assembly and prevent the election of the new Board of Directors for the period January 2020-January 2021.
In an action completely alien to the rule of law and the rules of democracy, the public forces, in this case the National Guard, the body responsible for the custody of the Legislative Palace, prevented access to the premises of a significant number of deputies identified with the opposition. Subsequently, other deputies, without complying with the minimum requirements of the law and the internal regulations of the Assembly, and without even verifying the required quorum, claimed the right to appoint a new board of directors.
As promoters and defenders of the right to vote, we must stress that denying deputies access to the facilities of the National Assembly not only violates their individual rights and the immunity inherent in their status as parliamentarians, but also that of the voters who gave them the mandate to represent them before the legislative body.
The security forces also prevented independent media from entering the Legislative Palace and their accreditation was revoked without any justification. Such an action constitutes a violation of the right of citizens to be informed, even more serious as it is an important event of interest for the life of all Venezuelans.
We call upon those who would arbitrarily impose an illegitimate and illegal directive of the National Assembly to respect the rules of the democratic game and to recognize the will of the majority of the Venezuelan people as expressed in the parliamentary elections of December 6th, 2015, as well as the will of the majority of deputies who, in a session that complied with the requirements of the corresponding law and internal regulations, elected the legitimate Board of Directors of the National Assembly that same day, January 5th.
We repudiate the event, which is embarrassing for our democratic institutions, that far from contributing to the search for a political and peaceful solution to the crisis that Venezuela is going through, it exacerbates the differences and further violates the rule of law and democracy in our country.
