The Unitary Platform, the Political Command and the Democratic Forces of Venezuela, expressed this Saturday their willingness to support and materialize a National Salvation Agreement with international support, despite the fact that the regime reinforced its policy of persecution and imprisonment of dissidents in the country.
“We denounce the persecution, kidnapping and forced disappearance of political leaders, social activists and human rights defenders. This occurs within the framework and the deepening of the State terrorism policy and the cancellation of the freedoms and democratic guarantees that enable the illegal and illegitimate exercise of the powers usurped by the dictatorship headed by Nicolás Maduro,” said Gabriel Puerta, President of ‘Bandera Roja’, reading a joint communiqué in the company of members and parties of the Unitary Platform.
He maintained that, under the protection of this regime policy, Congressman Freddy Guevara and the director of the NGO ‘FundaRedes’, Javier Tarazona, have been illegally and arbitrarily imprisoned. In addition, he denounced the harassment of President Juan Guaido and the persecution of the coordinator of ‘Voluntad Popular’, Emilio Graterón, the parliamentarian Gilber Caro and other political leaders and close collaborators of the interim government team.
“This repressive escalation, advanced with the excuse of the serious and unfortunate events that occurred at the ‘Cota 905’ in Caracas, is a vile maneuver to hide the seriousness of a political and humanitarian crisis that overwhelms the regime and of which they are the only ones responsible. They are its deepest cause and the main obstacle to overcoming it,” reads part of the statement.
Mr. Puerta indicated that the purpose of the dictatorship with these actions is to frustrate the efforts made by the Venezuelan democratic society, with the support of the international community, to achieve a constitutional, democratic, peaceful and electoral solution to the crisis that the country is experiencing through a negotiation that leads to a National Salvation Agreement.
“When, under the facilitation of the Norwegian government, important steps had been taken in this direction, Nicolás Maduro’s regime kicked the negotiating table before it was installed. This is not due to obtuseness of the regime or a work of chance, this repressive escalation is carried out in the presence of representatives of the Norwegian government and a European Union commission, which are evaluating the possibility of participating as observers in the upcoming regional and municipal elections. It is a maneuver and a provocation,” he explained.
The President of ‘Bandera Roja’ assured that the regime is afraid to consult the people so that they sovereignly choose their destiny through free, fair and verifiable elections, also knowing that 80% of the population is dissatisfied and urgently demands a change in the direction of Venezuela .
“On the contrary, we respond with more unity and perseverance. With firmness and serenity we ratify our decision to seek a constitutional, democratic, peaceful and electoral solution to the national tragedy caused by the dictatorship. We summon the people and explore all the possibilities. We announce the continuity and deepening of the efforts to expand the national and international support and backing, to the proposed National Salvation Agreement and our determination to resolve in unity the policy to be followed in the face of regional and municipal elections,” states the letter.
Mr. Rojas, on behalf of the Unitary Platform, demanded an end to the repression, the persecutions and the immediate freedom of all civilian and military political prisoners, as well as full and unconditional guarantees for the return of the exiles.
Finally, the President of ‘Bandera Roja’ thanked the support of the international democratic community and urged them to accompany the people in their suffering, contributing “substantially to overcoming the humanitarian crisis and to persevere and deepen efforts to open paths to a political and negotiated solution to the national crisis.”
