The employment status of university employees is increasingly unsustainable, the salaries they earn do not reach, for the most part, five dollars, so they can barely acquire one or two basic products.
Freddy Criollo, a retired worker at the University of Los Andes (ULA), explained that what he receives cannot be called salary. “It is assumed that a salary should allow to pay for housing, a vehicle, food, recreation and, unfortunately, none of that can be done with the current salary”, he explained.
The budgetary crunch for the operation of the houses of higher studies is increasingly evident, the university associations have declared, not the emergency, but the university catastrophe product of Maduro’s regime actions.
Dionis Dávila, national representative of the National Federation of Professionals and Technicians of the Universities of Venezuela (Fenasipruv), acknowledged that university workers do not have how to attend their jobs, they do not have enough to subsist. Simply put, they starve to death.
“We get up every morning thinking how do I get to my job site? How do I feed my children? A salary of a university worker is only enough for half a kilo of cheese, that is the reality we live, and the food basket is not enough for a bag of corn flour”, said Dávila.
Salary cuts due to lack of budgetary resources
Virgilio Castillo, president of the Association of Teachers of the ULA, indicated that there are plenty of reasons to fight and more when in the last “quincena” (by weekly payment) was less than the previous month’s payment, since apparently the resources were not allocated in a timely manner. For Castillo, university workers are not receiving a salary but an allowance, because that does not cover the basic needs of the worker or his family.
Ramón Pico, active worker of the ULA, said that for him the assignment that university students receive for their work is not a salary, it is a handout. Pico acknowledged that it is not enough for him to cover the bus ticket costs to be able to go to his job. The discount, made in the last quincena, is for Pico a vulgar robbery of university employees by the usurper government.
The situation as seen by the Association of Employees of the ULA is not very different, its representative Maydolis Villegas said that the last quincena received by university employees is not enough for a day of food.
University community will remain in protest
Feeling that they can no longer with bear this situation, the university community prepares for days of protests to claim for fair labor conditions, because it is not only the salary, but the absence of health care, given the amounts established for medical care are ridiculous.
At the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), the university community tried to make a march to the Ministry of University Education to reject the situation of misery they live under but, once again, the repressive bodies of the regime blocked it.
The university community assured that it will continue fighting to achieve a change in educational institutions and in the country.
Universities are responsible for the training of professionals in any country in the world, their work is vital for the development of nations, in addition to the achievements in research. In Venezuela, the usurper government wants to end autonomous universities and quality education.
