The ‘Partido Popular’ MEP and Human Rights spokesman for the European People’s Group in the European Parliament, Leopoldo López Gil, has called for “sanctions and concrete actions” for all those who participate in human rights violations of the Nicaraguan people, including President Daniel Ortega.
MEP López Gil, who has participated in the Human Rights Subcommittee, has expressed the concern of the entire European People’s Party “after the flagrant loss of democracy and the descent into a criminal dictatorship caused by the selfish will of the presidential marriage composed of Rosario Murillo and Daniel Ortega.”
He has specifically referred to the past elections of November 7th which were really “a sham, a ploy to stay in power illegally and against the will of the Nicaraguan people.”
The MEP has stated that the European People’s Group will ensure that the next December Plenary of the European Parliament draws up a strong resolution against the fraudulent elections in Nicaragua and that the EU does in any way recognize the result.
The MEP recalled that the plebiscite did not comply with international standards of impartiality, transparency or democracy but that, on the contrary, “they were characterized by a turbulent electoral climate dominated by the persecution of candidates, opposition leaders, businessmen, activists and journalists and even former fellow revolutionaries.”
“Almost 40 opposition figures were jailed and many of them fled the country. Several opposition parties were also disqualified. One must also add the harassment of journalists and owners of national media. International media were also prohibited from covering election day,” he said, all of which was made possible thanks to the approval of a series of repressive laws.
Finally, he remarked that, despite the propaganda, logistical and intimidating efforts of the Ortega regime, “around 85% of the population refused to participate in these false elections.”
